Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Cape Cod runs on a seasonal calendar. From roughly Labor Day to Memorial Day, most town beaches open up to dogs and the Cape becomes an excellent shoulder-season dog trip: empty sand, cool weather, and towns that are still open. In peak summer, the same beaches largely close to pets during the day.

Carmel is probably the most dog-obsessed small town on the California coast. Carmel Beach permits dogs off-leash under voice control, and the village behind it leans into it: patios put out water bowls, shops keep treats behind the counter, and hotels advertise dog beds as a matter of course. It is a short, walkable destination that works well as a one- or two-night stop.

Coronado Dog Beach sits at the north end of Coronado's famous wide, flat shoreline, with the Hotel del Coronado in view down the sand. It is off-leash, calm, and the gentlest introduction to a dog beach in San Diego County: smaller crowds than Ocean Beach and far more room per dog.

Destin's sugar-white sand is the draw, but Florida's Gulf beaches are among the strictest in the country about dogs. Most of the public beach in Destin proper is closed to pets, and the workaround is knowing the designated dog-friendly spots in and around Okaloosa and Walton counties rather than assuming any stretch of sand will do.
