The High Country is North Carolina's peak fall country: Boone and Blowing Rock strung along the Blue Ridge Parkway in full October color. The big one. More than 25 miles of wide, gentle carriage roads through peak color, and leashed dogs are welcome on the trails. The Bass Lake loop is flat, easy, and gorgeous: the single best morning walk in this guide. Free. Check Parkway repair closures first, since 2026 work can change which sections are open.

Broyhill Park
A town park with walking trails and room to roam, quieter than the parkway stops. Good for a low-key afternoon walk when you want color without the October crowds.
