Mountain Gold Rush, Dog-First Guide, Morgantown and Fairmont
This one is personal. Born and raised in this area of West Virginia, I lived here until 2002, and October is still my favorite time to return. The hills come alive with vibrant reds, oranges, and gold. I still consider it the best color show in the East, with a fraction of the crowds.
Half the fun is getting there. The drive up from North Carolina cuts straight through peak color, where Maxx used to ride shotgun with his nose out the window the whole way. Today, his sister Izzy has taken over the co-pilot seat, soaking in every view and scent. Once you roll in, these mountains welcome you with sweeping overlooks, rushing waterfalls, peaceful rail trails, and two easygoing downtowns. Here are the 19 stops I would send any friend with a dog.

The 46th annual Bridge Day took place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, on the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, about 2.5 hours south. It returns every third Saturday of October, so mark your calendar for next year. Honest take: the crowds, noise, and BASE jumpers are too much for most dogs, so leave the pup at the inn if you go to the event. The good news is that New River Gorge National Park trails welcome leashed dogs, so the area is a great day trip any other day of the season.
