Dog-Friendly Beaches in San Diego, California

San Diego is one of the few big American cities with a genuinely off-leash beach culture. Dog Beach in Ocean Beach has allowed dogs off-leash around the clock for decades, and Coronado and Del Mar add seasonal stretches of their own. The catch is that rules change street by street and season by season, so it pays to know which sand you are standing on before you unclip the leash.

Leash rules and seasonal restrictions

Ocean Beach Dog Beach is off-leash 24 hours a day, year-round. Del Mar's North Beach ("Dog Beach") shifts between off-leash and leash-required depending on the season. Most other San Diego city beaches require a leash and restrict dogs during daytime summer hours. Always check posted signage on arrival.

Rules change season to season — confirm with the city or county before you travel.
