Dog-Friendly Beaches in The Outer Banks, North Carolina
The Outer Banks is unusually generous to dogs: across much of the barrier islands, leashed dogs are welcome on the beach year-round rather than only in the off-season. Each town sets its own leash length and hours, and the National Seashore has separate rules again, so a single trip can cross three different rulebooks in twenty miles.
Leash rules and seasonal restrictions
Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Duck each permit leashed dogs on the beach year-round, with leash-length limits that vary by town (commonly 6 to 10 feet). Cape Hatteras National Seashore allows leashed dogs but closes areas seasonally for nesting shorebirds and turtles. Corolla's four-wheel-drive beaches have their own restrictions.
